Residents and businesses in the greater San Antonio area are about to experience a significant change in their telecommunications landscape. To meet the growing demand for new phone numbers, the Public Utility Commission of Texas has approved the implementation of a new area code. Get ready to welcome the 796 area code.
A New Overlay for a Growing Region
The new 796 area code has been introduced as an “overlay” for the region currently served by the well-established 210 and 830 area codes. An overlay does not replace the existing area codes; instead, it adds a new one to the same geographic territory. This means that current residents will keep their existing 210 or 830 numbers, while new customers or those adding new lines may be assigned a number with the 796 area code.
The area served by this overlay is extensive, covering a vibrant and diverse part of Texas. This includes the heart of San Antonio, Bexar County, and extends to surrounding communities and a significant portion of the Texas Hill Country.
Why is the 796 Area Code Being Introduced?
The primary reason for introducing the 796 area code is simple: the existing area codes are running out of available phone numbers. This phenomenon, known as “number exhaustion,” is a common issue in areas with significant population growth and an increasing number of devices requiring a phone number, from mobile phones to business lines and IoT devices.
The implementation of the 796 area code ensures that there will be a fresh supply of numbers to accommodate the continued growth and technological needs of the San Antonio area for years to come.
The Most Important Change: Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing

The most significant impact of the 796 area code overlay is the transition to mandatory 10-digit dialing for all local calls. Because the three area codes (210, 830, and the new 796 area code) will now serve the same geographic region, dialing just seven digits will no longer be sufficient to connect a call.
All residents must now dial the area code followed by the seven-digit telephone number for every local call. For example, to call a number within the same area, you will need to dial “210-XXX-XXXX” or “830-XXX-XXXX,” and soon, “796-XXX-XXXX.”
Key Dates and How to Prepare
The transition to the new 796 area code and 10-digit dialing has been implemented in phases. While the permissive dialing period has ended, it’s crucial to ensure all your devices are updated.
- Check Your Devices: Reprogram any equipment that uses automatic dialing, such as life safety systems, medical monitoring devices, security systems, and mobile phone contact lists, to include the area code.
- Update Your Information: Ensure your personal and business contact information, including websites, stationery, and advertising materials, reflects your full 10-digit number.
- What Stays the Same: Your current phone number, including your area code, will not change. The price of a call, coverage area, and other rates and services will also remain the same. Calls to 911, 411, and other three-digit services are not affected.
The introduction of the 796 area code marks a new chapter for the San Antonio region, reflecting its dynamic growth and ensuring it remains connected for the future.
